What is a email list and how do I build and maintain one? This beginner’s guide will explain exactly how it all works. By the end, you should have a pretty solid grasp of the basics.

Assuming that your art business is up and running, you should have already started building your email list before the launch, but just like I did when I started my first business, I did not do that. I’m here to tell you that I’m proud of you for starting now.

I recently did a social media campaign on email marketing and it was a hit so I figured it was better time than any to spread some of the wealth to my blog reading friends. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.

You now have the job of deciding what email provider you want to use to manage your email campaigns, We are already past the confusion of why you should have an email list but I’ll briefly list a few reasons as a refresher.

You should have a email list because

  • Social media is unpredictable and you don’t want that to be your only source of contact for your audience
  • This is the perfect place to nurture your new relationship with your audience and get to know them
  • You can share new products and happenings directly to your ideal customer

What is a email list exactly?

An email list is a collection of email lists that are gathered with the goal of marketing and keeping in touch with your customers. This list can be gathered through your blog or website. You can also be school and gather this list from social media or people you meet and write it down on a piece of paper (please don’t do this). Make sure that everyone on your email asked to be there, you cannot just add anyone to your email without their permission. That’s just weird and feels a little illegal.

Now that that’s out of the way, building that email list should be the easy part. There’s a few ways you can get people to subscribe, let’s go through some.

  • Offer a freebie in the form of a popup on your site in exchange for their email address
  • Run a giveaway on social media and make signing up one of the rules
  • Release exclusive subscriber only content as a reason to join your email list
  • Have a signup form on your site footer so it’s not in the way of the goods
  • Exit Intent popups: These pop up when someone is about to leave your site, grab them with a discount code before they leave.
  • Try a fun game like a spin the wheel popup
  • Talk about your email list on social media
  • Include an opt in option at checkout

Be consistent with your emails. No one wants to feel like you don’t want to talk to them, keep in touch with your audience. It’s also important to keep an eye on your stats and analytics. Open rate, clickthrough rate, bounce rate and conversion rate are just a few to keep an eye on.

What do all of these mean?

There are other metrics to watch and measure but these are just a few. These are important because you need to understand how your emails are performing and if you need to change your strategy or approach. These metrics will reveal those things. Check these frequently.

Spend some time to build your email list and figure out your sole purpose of sending emails. With your overall goal in mind, it will be come easier to create strategy for your email marketing efforts. You got this!
